G&R Peruvian Sweet Onion Crop Update
August 2019

The sweet onion season seems to never stop, and this year is no exception. In a recent trip to Peru, G&R’s management team enjoyed a first-hand look at this year’s crop. One thing to keep in mind about Peru’s sweet onion production is the long planting and harvesting window that we enjoy there. So, as we visit, we see onions being harvested and planted on the same trip. Like always we see excellent quality on its way. The sandy soils mirror our Vidalia fields and we have selected the best varieties that will provide a great dining experience and excellent shelf life.

Certified Organic Production

G&R has offered certified organic Vidalia Sweet Onions for many years and we are excited to announce we will now provide Certified Organic Peruvian Onions for the first time. These will be in limited supply so be sure to contact our sales staff soon about your order.

Peruvian Quality

The one thing you can count on from Peru’s sweet onions are quality. The climate is ideal for the type of onions we are producing. We work hard with our retail partners to provide the size profile they desire and the appearance and taste is outstanding this year. Another interesting note is their freshness - the harvest is staggered so that we gather a little each week, keeping the freshest product in your retail stores for many weeks to come. The fields we visited were pristine and very healthy with amazing views of the mountain ranges in the background, and lush onion tops. The pride is definitely in the production, and as we like to say “Precision Farming By Hand”. The workers and producers provide a highly technical approach to fertilizer and water management to get the most out of the crop while protecting the environment. Every drop of water counts and the stewardship is very high in these onion fields. G&R is in a partnership with nature, and we have been blessed with another great crop of Sweet Onions. Thank you for you continued business and continued interest in our sweet onion program!
